Grooms Speeches – The Secrets Of Writing a Great Wedding Speech

Posted by grooms-speeches-help on December 19th, 2009

It has come down to the actual day of the wedding and you are obviously excited about the day’s events – the wedding, the reception, the grooms speeches and toasts! But you wonder, “Am I really ready to give the wedding speech?” This was definitely my concern at our wedding, with over a hundred guests and most of the family attending.

The Grooms Speech – Take It A Step At A Time

grooms speeches pxSo, how did I handle preparing my wedding speech? I sought out help and advice that would provide the ideas and thought-starters for a heartfelt speech that would be remembered by all the guests. Starting from scratch with a blank sheet of paper was not an option for me. I assume that most of you grooms are in the same position – not professional writers – and can use a little help in preparing your grooms speech.

This is why I put together this blog, so other grooms would not need to get all stressed out over the grooms speeches and toasts that are all just part of most weddings these days. Your bride will also be thinking about the brides speech, but my advice is just for you grooms!

Prepare Your Grooms Speeches Early

A major misconception that many grooms have is that wedding speeches are just not worth the trouble. Well think again! A well-thought out grooms speech, with words that are carefully chosen and the idea creatively generated, will not magically appear on you speech notes. A wedding speech is something that actually requires some serious thought.

Also, talk with your bride-to-be about her thoughts on the content of her brides speech. Do you want to coordinate the bride and groom speeches so the themes are consistent? You obviously don’t want to be telling the same stories or have conflicting content in your speeches. This is what we did for our wedding speeches and the results were far improved over just preparing our speeches in a vacuum. I found that it’s really a good idea to share your thoughts about your wedding speeches with your bride as you prepare for that special day!

I found that having examples of other grooms speeches proved to be a life saver when I was preparing my speech. Wedding speech examples can be inspirational and help focus your mind on the possibilities and theme options you can use as the basis for your own speech. And what I thought was another great benefit was the time savings – and who doesn’t need more time these days. So, my advice to all you grooms is to take the time to do a little research and you can rest assured that your speech will be memorable and special to all your wedding guests.

Wedding Grooms Speech – What Really Matters?

Posted by grooms-speeches-help on November 18th, 2009

As I found out early in my research for my wedding grooms speech was that it was not all about me. At first my thoughts were to focus on a few personal moments with my bride and others in the wedding party (i.e. best man, maid of honor, father and mother of the bride, etc.) But it didn’t take long to realize that there are other considerations that will really drive the focus on your wedding speech.

You guessed it – what really matters most is the reaction and impression that your audience will have after hearing your wedding speech. It’s not dissimilar from the way that you would talk to your boss or your colleague, hoping that they walk away with the intended message you delivered.

You really want to consider your wedding reception guests’ feelings and beliefs when delivering your speech. Don’t make points in your speech that could offend or embarrass your guests or individuals in your wedding party. It’s always fun to tell a funny story, but be aware of how that person might react to this being public knowledge.

Identify Your Audience

A consideration that I found to be key in preparing my grooms speech was to attempt to identify with my audience. Essentially, by identifying with my friends, family and other guests I was able to come up with a wedding speech that the audience related to. This made giving my wedding speech all the more easy! The wedding reception guests were more attentive and responsive than I could imagine.

Be sure to stay away from inside jokes as you will lose the audience fast as they scratch their heads trying to figure out what you are talking about. And by all means, avoid any off-color humor as this will be certain to turn off some of your wedding guests.

As I found out early in the process of writing the wedding grooms speech, you must consider the most important factor in making your wedding speech — the audience. Write as if you were talking to them personally and you will certainly connect with them in your speech.

Grooms Speech Ideas – Some Do’s and Don’t

Posted by grooms-speeches-help on November 10th, 2009

The grooms speech is one of the most intimidating wedding speeches, outside of the wedding vows themselves, you will give on this special day. At least this is the way I felt when looking back at my wedding day. Not being the best writer in the world, finding grooms speech ideas was my first mission when I sat down to write a draft of this important wedding speech.

There were plenty of grooms speech resources available that included ideas for the speech and examples to follow or copy. They really helped me get my head straight about what I wanted to say and exactly how to structure the speech.

What I also discovered in my search was some general DO’s and Don’ts when it came to giving the wedding grooms speech, and any other for that matter. They are:

Remember who your target audience is — the wedding guests. Yes, you are speaking to all of the guests, not just a chosen few.

Stay away from inside jokes — This is where you can lose your audience and have them scratching their heads over the meaning of the story.

Avoid off-color remarks at all times — colorful language may be excepted in today’s culture, but it has no place at the wedding ceremonies and can often offend guests and leave a bad memory of the event.

View your jokes through your audience’s ears — What may seem like a harmless joke to you may be quite offensive to other segments of your audience, like the elderly who are present at the wedding. The older set tend to have more stringent thoughts of what is acceptable language. If in doubt, test it out on some of your friends and relatives.

Try to avoid causing problems and conflicts with your stories — you don’t want to create a conflict between your wedding guests because of what you thought was a “harmless” story you told in your wedding speech or toast. It really is important to write your grooms wedding speech focused on the best interest of the audience.

But most importantly, remember your audience first when preparing your grooms speech and you will create a memorable moment for all to appreciate.

Grooms Toast Ideas

Posted by grooms-speeches-help on November 4th, 2009

Every wedding will have a time for a grooms toast and it is generally a memorable speech regardless of how short it may be.  You should keep in mind that this should be a light-hearted moment focused on stories and anecdotes about the bride, your wedding party members, or family members.

Keep Your Wedding Toast Short And Simple

Your grooms toast should be no longer than 3-4 minutes, and even shorter if possible, as guests can become bored easily and will tend to tune you out.  A quick thank you to a best man, parents or other wedding party member is always a safe bet.

Avoid inside jokes, off-color jokes, or inappropriate remarks about the person or persons the toast is directed.  Nothing will put your guests more ill-at-ease than an off color joke regardless of how funny it may be.  You really don’t want your wedding guests, bride or parents to have to endure an ill-conceived toast, so keep it simple.

The subject of your wedding toast can compliment your grooms speech with a short version of a personal memory, a funny experience with the target of the toast, or just a heart-felt thanks for a special person’s support in the past.  Humorous and funny wedding toasts can keep the party lively and keep the mood upbeat.  But a personal story or anecdote can be a memorable moment that is remembered by all the wedding guests.

The choice is always yours, but it is extremely important for you, the groom, to be prepared for your toast.  Don’t try to wing it, unless you are a professional wedding speech presenter.

Wedding Toast Etiquette

Now a few words of advice if you and the bride are the target of a toast.   This is something that is often not considered at wedding receptions, but there is a right and wrong way to react when you are being toasted.  If you are the recipient of a wedding toast, which you will be sure to experience, everybody except you and the bride should stand until the toast is completed.

Upon completion of the toast, which may sound like, “Won’t you please join me in a toast for Mr. and Mrs.”, the guests should raise their glasses in a toast, sip from their beverage and then be seated.  This is your que for perhaps a kiss for the bride and a big smile.

Preparing Your Grooms Toast

Not being a great wedding speech writer, I found that getting help with the grooms toast was essential, even if it was just for getting a few ideas and thought-starters.  Having prepared a few different wedding toasts for special people in the wedding party, I certainly felt more confident and at-ease when the time came to give thanks to these individuals.  Weddings are stressful enough without the worry of embarrassing yourself over a simple grooms toast, so take my advice and prepare your short speech ahead of time.  You’ll be happy you did!

Free Grooms Wedding Speeches – Are They Worth It?

Posted by grooms-speeches-help on November 4th, 2009

The question I asked myself when I began my search for help in writing my grooms wedding speeches and toasts was how cheaply I could do it.  Now I did find a few sites on the internet with  some helpful tips on how to make a wedding speech or how to present it to the guests.

Because statistics show that more individuals are afraid of public speaking then they are of far more serious fears, it can really result in a “panic attack” if you are not prepared.  The question you should ask yourself is whether looking for free speeches on the net will really help, or should you be spending your time looking for resources that can really help put together a knock-out grooms speech?   If you are lucky enough to find something that is free, it generally tends to be rather impersonal and very general.

Grooms Wedding Speech Examples

What I ended doing was to find a resource that provided grooms wedding speeches in a template format which proved to be very helpful as a starting point for my own wedding speech.  Now the best thing about these examples of grooms speeches is that they are designed with fill-in-the-blank formats, yet they allow you to create a totally unique wedding speech.  Pretty cool!

A typical wedding speech format will prompt you for:

  • Individuals you need to thank,
  • Your personal feeling about your wedding day,
  • Stories you want to tell,
  • Groom wedding speech jokes and anecdotes,
  • Thoughts about your bride, and
  • How to get your audience involved

This is just a brief overview of the different components of the wedding speech examples that I discovered.  Though my research had identified what the successful elements of a grooms wedding speech should contain, the  beauty of the templates were that they were all placed in front of you in an ordered layout.  How could you go wrong?

Are Free Wedding Speeches A Bust?

So, it’s really up to you as to whether it is worth the time to look for free wedding speeches online and actually be able to make any use of them.  Unfortunately, I couldn’t.  It was some of the better sites, while charging a nominal fee, provided examples of grooms wedding speeches in a fill-in-the-blank format that really proved priceless to me as I prepared one of the most important speeches of my life.  And my wedding speech came off just perfect too!

The Importance Of The Grooms Speach

Posted by grooms-speeches-help on November 4th, 2009

Once you are knee deep into the wedding planning process, you will learn that there are basically three kinds of traditional wedding speaches:  the grooms speach, the father of the bride speach, and the best mans speach.  Now this is just a guideline, but almost all weddings have at least these three speaches.

What’s In The Grooms Speach?

This speach generally includes a host of “thank you’s” to all of those who made the celebration possible and memorable.  This is the ideal time to thank the parents (father and mother of the groom) for all the love and care they provided as you grew up and through the wedding day.  Of course, feel free to add any memorable moments and special acts of kindness.

I found that grooms speaches can be difficult to write and I appreciated all the assistance I could find.  Once I found some wedding speach examples, it became a lot clearer for me how to structure my speach and what I wanted to say.  So, don’t hesitate to use the advice provided on this blog and any other wedding speach resources you can find.

The Other Two Wedding Speaches

Besides the grooms speach, there should be a father of the bride wedding speach.  This one is generally the most emotional speech and can be the most touching one.  This is where the bride’s father will be endorsing his daughter to her new husband.  Assuming that the relationship between the groom and the father of the bride is good, this speach can really steal the show.

The last wedding speach is the best man’s speach.  This is where things can get a little crazy, at least it did at our wedding.  This speach can be the most enlightening one of them all because it involves the lighter side of the reception.  Generally, the best man will expose stories about the groom and his crazy antics and can sometimes be a little embarrassing for the groom.  At our wedding, the best man disclosed a long forgotten “road trip” which had gone awry with excruciating detail targeted at me, but it was all in fun!

Of all these wedding speaches given throughout the day, it is the audience that should be considered foremost when making the grooms speach.  Once you learn this important factor, then it becomes so much clearer which things should be said and which should be left out of your speach.
