It has come down to the actual day of the wedding and you are obviously excited about the day’s events – the wedding, the reception, the grooms speeches and toasts! But you wonder, “Am I really ready to give the wedding speech?” This was definitely my concern at our wedding, with over a hundred guests and most of the family attending.

So, how did I handle preparing my wedding speech? I sought out help and advice that would provide the ideas and thought-starters for a heartfelt speech that would be remembered by all the guests. Starting from scratch with a blank sheet of paper was not an option for me. I assume that most of you grooms are in the same position – not professional writers – and can use a little help in preparing your grooms speech.

Prepare Your Grooms Speeches Early

A major misconception that many grooms have is that wedding speeches are just not worth the trouble. Well think again! A well-thought out grooms speech, with words that are carefully chosen and the idea creatively generated, will not magically appear on you speech notes. A wedding speech is something that actually requires some serious thought.

Also, talk with your bride-to-be about her thoughts on the content of her brides speech. Do you want to coordinate the bride and groom speeches so the themes are consistent? You obviously don’t want to be telling the same stories or have conflicting content in your speeches. This is what we did for our wedding speeches and the results were far improved over just preparing our speeches in a vacuum. I found that it’s really a good idea to share your thoughts about your wedding speeches with your bride as you prepare for that special day!

I found that having examples of other grooms speeches proved to be a life saver when I was preparing my speech. Wedding speech examples can be inspirational and help focus your mind on the possibilities and theme options you can use as the basis for your own speech. And what I thought was another great benefit was the time savings – and who doesn’t need more time these days. So, my advice to all you grooms is to take the time to do a little research and you can rest assured that your speech will be memorable and special to all your wedding guests.

The grooms speech is one of the most intimidating wedding speeches, outside of the wedding vows themselves, you will give on this special day. At least this is the way I felt when looking back at my wedding day. What I also discovered in my search was some general DO’s and Don’ts when it came to giving the wedding grooms speech, and any other for that matter. They are:

Remember who your target audience is — the wedding guests. Yes, you are speaking to all of the guests, not just a chosen few.

Stay away from inside jokes — This is where you can lose your audience and have them scratching their heads over the meaning of the story.

Avoid off-color remarks at all times — colorful language may be excepted in today’s culture, but it has no place at the wedding ceremonies and can often offend guests and leave a bad memory of the event.

View your jokes through your audience’s ears — What may seem like a harmless joke to you may be quite offensive to other segments of your audience, like the elderly who are present at the wedding. The older set tend to have more stringent thoughts of what is acceptable language. If in doubt, test it out on some of your friends and relatives.

Try to avoid causing problems and conflicts with your stories — you don’t want to create a conflict between your wedding guests because of what you thought was a “harmless” story you told in your wedding speech or toast. It really is important to write your grooms wedding speech focused on the best interest of the audience.

But most importantly, remember your audience first when preparing your grooms speech and you will create a memorable moment for all to appreciate.
