As I found out early in my research for my wedding grooms speech was that it was not all about me. At first my thoughts were to focus on a few personal moments with my bride and others in the wedding party (i.e. best man, maid of honor, father and mother of the bride, etc.) But it didn’t take long to realize that there are other considerations that will really drive the focus on your wedding speech.

Who Hears The Grooms Wedding Speech?

Our Wedding Day

You guessed it – what really matters most is the reaction and impression that your audience will have after hearing your wedding speech. It’s not dissimilar from the way that you would talk to your boss or your colleague, hoping that they walk away with the intended message you delivered.

You really want to consider your wedding reception guests’ feelings and beliefs when delivering your speech. Don’t make points in your speech that could offend or embarrass your guests or individuals in your wedding party. It’s always fun to tell a funny story, but be aware of how that person might react to this being public knowledge.

Identify Your Audience

A consideration that I found to be key in preparing my grooms speech was to attempt to identify with my audience. Essentially, by identifying with my friends, family and other guests I was able to come up with a wedding speech that the audience related to. This made giving my wedding speech all the more easy! The wedding reception guests were more attentive and responsive than I could imagine.

Be sure to stay away from inside jokes as you will lose the audience fast as they scratch their heads trying to figure out what you are talking about. And by all means, avoid any off-color humor as this will be certain to turn off some of your wedding guests.

As I found out early in the process of writing the wedding grooms speech, you must consider the most important factor in making your wedding speech — the audience. Write as if you were talking to them personally and you will certainly connect with them in your speech.

Once you are knee deep into the wedding planning process, you will learn that there are basically three kinds of traditional wedding speaches: the grooms speach, the father of the bride speach, and the best mans speach. Now this is just a guideline, but almost all weddings have at least these three speaches.

What’s In The Grooms Speach?

This speach generally includes a host of “thank you’s” to all of those who made the celebration possible and memorable. This is the ideal time to thank the parents (father and mother of the groom) for all the love and care they provided as you grew up and through the wedding day. Of course, feel free to add any memorable moments and special acts of kindness.

I found that grooms speaches can be difficult to write and I appreciated all the assistance I could find. Once I found some wedding speach examples, it became a lot clearer for me how to structure my speach and what I wanted to say. So, don’t hesitate to use the advice provided on this blog and any other wedding speach resources you can find.

The Other Two Wedding Speaches

Besides the grooms speach, there should be a father of the bride wedding speach. This one is generally the most emotional speech and can be the most touching one. This is where the bride’s father will be endorsing his daughter to her new husband. Assuming that the relationship between the groom and the father of the bride is good, this speach can really steal the show.

The last wedding speach is the best man’s speach. This is where things can get a little crazy, at least it did at our wedding. This speach can be the most enlightening one of them all because it involves the lighter side of the reception. Generally, the best man will expose stories about the groom and his crazy antics and can sometimes be a little embarrassing for the groom. At our wedding, the best man disclosed a long forgotten “road trip” which had gone awry with excruciating detail targeted at me, but it was all in fun!

Of all these wedding speaches given throughout the day, it is the audience that should be considered foremost when making the grooms speach. Once you learn this important factor, then it becomes so much clearer which things should be said and which should be left out of your speach.
